The expected top lot is #1, Ernest Hemingways (1899-1961) In Our Time, which is estimated at $12,000 to $20,000. This first edition, first printing of Hemingways first book published in the U.S. includes its scarce and original unclipped ($2.00) dust jacket. This example was published in New York by Boni & Liveright in 1925. Only 1,335 copies of this edition were printed. This sale also features several important Hemingway publications and letters such as a collection of materials related to Hemingways Tanganyika Letters estimated at $8,500 to $16,000. This archive includes a letter from Hemingway to Esquire Magazine editor Arnold Gingrich (1903-1976); an original mailing envelope in Hemingways hand; issues of Esquire from April, June and July of 1934; four black and white original photos, each with Hemingways manuscript captions; a telegram from Hemingway to Gingrich, and other ephemera, all relating to the series of articles in Esquire about Hemingways safari. These would become an early peek at his yet-to-be-published nonfiction title, Green Hills of Africa from 1935. Among the earliest known items by Hemingway, an autographed postcard signed to his father as an 8-year-old child, is estimated at $5,000 to $10,000. This note from Windemere in Walloon Lake, Mich., is from around 1907 and is written in pencil in Hemingways childish manuscript. It is addressed Dear papa and signed on verso Ernest Heming/way. It reads, Dear papa. I saw a mother duck with seven little babies. how big is my corn? / Ursula saw them first we went strawberry picking and got enough to make three short-cakes. Ernest Heming/way.
